Shopping
For many centuries, Istanbul has, thanks to its strategically important location on the crossroads of major trade routes, been one of the most prized centers of commerce, gathering merchants from all corners of the globe with a wide range of exciting goods to sell. In recent times, with the influence of the western world on this cosmopolitan city, along with traditional, exquisite oriental merchandise especially attractive to tourists, there has been a major leap in terms of modern-time shopping, with worldwide brands finding its way into the streets of Istanbul and its European-style shopping malls. So, whether you would like to buy spices, fabrics and antiques of the ancient east, or want to enjoy a luxurious shopping and leisure center with cinemas and cafes, shopping should definitely be on your to-do list when visiting this magnificent city on Bosphorus.
Talking about traditional-style shopping, for instance at bazaars, the first thing that comes to mind is bargaining. Of course, even though bargaining is common in Istanbul, it should not be taken lightly and impolitely. Outside of bazaars you should not bargain, although you might ask for a cash discount, which some stores may approve. Even in bazaars, you should always ask if the price is fixed first, and if you get a negative answer, bargain away. The best tip is not looking that much interested in the goods you are looking to buy, and if you play it well, in most cases you can get merchandise for as little as half of the initial offer. Below is the list of some different centers of commerce around the city.
