Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

Art and Culture at The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

Whilst Istanbul is steeped in ancient history, not every single attraction is  bout what went on back in the day, some are enshrined in what is happening now! If you’re a contemporary art lover, someone who can stand and adore a piece of art for a good amount of time, and someone who enjoys soaking up culture at the same time, the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art is a pitstop you should be taking during your visit to the city.

The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art is a private museum which opened its doors in 2004. Since then it has hosted various different artists, and serves to showcase local, national, and international pieces of art to its many visitors across the globe. Aside from regular art, the museum also regularly hosts various exhibitions of photography, film, and books, bringing together an entirely cultural experience for those who pass through its doors. The aims is to show the world that Turkish artists are certainly something to be reckoned with, but also to bring the world together through the various mediums of art too.

In addition, book lovers will enjoy their time in the museum, as it is home to around 9000 different books, heading over various different genres and countries.

Visiting The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

Located in Tophane, it is very easy to get to the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art from Taksim itself. It is literally within walking distance, or you can jump on the Metro and go on one stop further, to save your legs! There are fantastic views over the Bosphorus from the museum itself, especially during the late afternoon of the winter months, when the sun sets a little earlier, and you can see the famous golden glow, right over to the Asian side of the city. There is also a cafe and restaurant on the upper floors of the museum, where you can sit and check out the view with a refreshment, or you can have a delicious meal there, from the large menu on offer.

If you love cinema, be sure to check out the Istanbul Modern Cinema, which is inside the museum. You get to go inside as part of your museum entry fee, so it’s not going to cost you anything extra – definitely worth a visit! In addition, the museum is part of the Google Cultural Institute, which means you can head online and check out the items you’re likely to be seeing before you go there. This is useful because it means if you’re a little short on time, you can highlight your main areas of interest. If not however, it’s a good idea just to wander around to your heart’s content, in a leisurely manner. The museum never really feels that crowded, so you’re not going to have to jostle for space most of the time. Having said that, weekends and public holidays are going to be busier than mid-week slots.

The museum’s gift shop is also worth a visit, as you can purchase replicated pieces of the art in various forms, including posters and phone cases! These items make for wonderful gifts to take back home, especially if you have an art lover in your midst!

Opening Times and Entrance Fee to The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

Visiting the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art is a must do for anyone who loves art and culture, but it’s also a great spot to to regardless.
