Panorama 1453

Travel Back in Time at Panorama 1453

The name, ‘Panorama 1453’ probably has viewing platforms and upmarket hotels coming to mind. In fact, Panorama 1453 is anything but the modern, and is actually a very useful way of travelling back in time, to the very conquest of Constantinople itself.

We have yet to discover a time capsule, or a time machine which will allow us to go back in time and witness key events in history, but we do have this museum, and if you’re interested in how the Ottomans grabbed power of what was then Constantinople, Panorama 1453 is a must visit for you.

What is Panorama 1453?

Located in the Topkapi neighbourhood, near Fatih, Panorama 1453 is a museum which allows you to witness in 3D the conquest of Constantinople. You will literally feel like you’re right there, in the moment, hiding for your life!

Officially known as the Panorama 1453 Historical Museum, you enter the building by going downstairs, via a spiral staircase. At this point you’re already experiencing history, as on the walls you will see drawings and texts explaining and show you what life would have been like during the Byzantine era in Istanbul. Of course, this is before the Ottomans arrived, but continue walking down another flight of stairs, and the Ottomans will be right there!

Put on your 3D glasses and you are transported back in time to 29 May 1453. Keep walking, and you’ll see the blue sky, just like any other day, before anything out of the ordinary happened. Just another day. Keep walking, and then boom! You reach the viewing platform and right in front of you the Ottomans have arrived, loud and with smoke and cannons. Every single direction you look in you’re immersed in the famous day.

The sheer detail that Panorama 1453 manages to put into this interactive museum is astounding. You really will feel like you’re right there, surrounded by everything that was terrifying yet liberating about that day. You’ll see horses, cannons, gun fire, explosions, Byzantines and Ottomans, noise, until everything reaches a thrilling crescendo.

By the time you leave the room and head back towards the stairs you’ll feel the hairs pricked up on your arms. You feel like you’ve just witnessed history, and you have. You saw the Ottomans defeat the Byzantines and take Constantinople as their own, thus beginning a whole new empire and era in world history. This was something special, and you were right there, sort of.

Fatih is the oldest part of Istanbul, so there is no shortage of things to see and do. Of course, you can easily head down to Sultanahmet or Eminonu from here, and visit the other cultural and historical spots, such as Topkapi Palace, Gulhane Park, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Hagia Irene Museum. These are just a handful of places, with countless more besides, how about the Grand Bazaar, Basilica Cistern … the list goes on! These spots are all within a few minutes of each other, so you can easily plan your day and get to see a few different attractions within one visit to Sultanahmet and Fatih.
