Turkey became an independent republic and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk became its first President. Ankara replaced Istanbul as the capital of the Turkish Republic.
Despite not being the capital city of Turkey, Istanbul will always remain the most important city in the country, especially due to the rich history that is attached to it.
