One of the greatest fires in the history of Istanbul, known as the Great Fire of 1660, happened on this day. It is said that almost two thirds of the city’s area was destroyed with extensive damages to several mosques, houses, and other buildings in the city. Several thousands of people lost their lives to the fire and the plague that occurred as a result of it.
