The Ottoman Turks led by Sultan Mehmet II the Conqueror defeated the Byzantine army under Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos and invaded the city of Constantinople, thereby marking the beginning of the rule of the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople and the downfall of the Byzantine Empire. Soon after the conquest, the name of the city was changed to Istanbul.
